The most accomplished Brazilian flutist presents a widely acclaimed tribute to the brilliant Moacir Santos (1926–2006) — the Pernambuco-born arranger, conductor, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who made his career in the United States — in the concert Uma Roda para Moacir Santos. Joined by her quartet, Andrea performs works that showcase Moacir's distinctive Afro-jazz style, including Coisa No. 5 – Nanã, Coisa No. 4, Coisa No. 9, and Mãe Iracema. The performance celebrates the Afro-Brazilian musicality of one of the most influential figures in the harmonic evolution of Brazilian popular music (MPB), and a mentor to icons such as Baden Powell, João Donato, Roberto Menescal, Paulo Moura, and Sérgio Mendes. Andrea Ernest Dias is a leading figure in Brazilian instrumental music, with a career defined by versatility and technical excellence. She moves effortlessly between classical music, choro, jazz, and Brazilian popular music. A researcher and professor at UFRJ, Andrea is also recognized for her work in reviving forgotten repertoires and training new generations of musicians. This concert is also part of the prestigious Jazz in Marciac festival, as a result of the partnership between the MIMO Festival and the French event within the framework of the Brazil–France Crossed Season 2025. Andrea's role in the MIMO Festival's international curatorship highlights the recognition of her artistic journey and the depth of her work with Brazilian music. Her presence reaffirms the vital role of artist-researchers in preserving, reinterpreting, and internationalizing the MPB repertoire — connecting tradition and innovation on some of the world’s most respected stages.
