Sona Jobarteh is one of the most influential artists in contemporary African music. Born in The Gambia into a griot family with over seven centuries of tradition, she is the first woman to gain international recognition as a master of the kora — a 21-string instrument traditionally reserved for men in West Africa. Her achievement marks a revolution within one of the world’s oldest musical lineages. Raised between The Gambia and the United Kingdom, she began her musical education in childhood, studying at the Royal College of Music and the Purcell School, where she specialized in cello, harpsichord, and composition. This classical foundation, combined with the oral traditions passed down through her family, shaped an artist of rare versatility. She also holds academic training in philosophy and ethnomusicology, with research focused on African music, which deepens and enriches her work. Her sound blends Manding music with influences of Afrobeat, soul, classical music, and Afropop. In her latest album, Badinyaa Kumoo (2022), she reaffirms her artistic strength with songs that celebrate unity, justice, and African cultural identity. With a captivating sound and a clear social message, Sona Jobarteh connects past and future with elegance, conviction, and profound musicality.
