One of the most respected names in contemporary Cuban music, Fonseca was born in Havana into a family deeply connected to music. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and virtuoso pianist, he began with percussion but found his artistic voice through the piano, which he started playing at age 8 and composing on by 14, influenced by traditional Cuban rhythms with African roots and jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. His international career took off in 2001 when he joined Ibrahim Ferrer’s orchestra and later became part of the Buena Vista Social Club, performing hundreds of concerts around the world. Since then, he has established himself as a creative bridge between Cuban musical tradition and the sounds of the 21st century. His acclaimed albums explore sophisticated fusions of jazz, Cuban grooves, classical music, and electronic elements. Fonseca has collaborated with artists such as Gilles Peterson, Mayra Andrade, Raul Midón, Fatoumata Diawara, and Carlinhos Brown, confirming his versatility and his role as an ambassador for the modern music of his country. At the MIMO Festival, he presents the show based on his latest album, “La Gran Diversión” (2023), a tribute to the Havana dance halls of the 1950s. With Roberto Fonseca, the festival’s closing night promises to be a true Cuban party — vibrant, infectious, and full of soul.
