Portugal will soon welcome the world of acclaimed surrealist blues poet and New York activist Aja Monet. Raised in Brooklyn, she began writing poetry at the age of eight. She holds a degree in Arts and Creative Writing and gained widespread recognition with her celebrated collection My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter (2017). Two years earlier, she took part in a flashmob in support of Palestine and other related causes. Her debut album, When the Poems Do What They Do (2023), blends spoken word and jazz, paying tribute to figures of the Black Arts Movement such as Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and Amiri Baraka. The work was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album in 2024. Aja Monet is not just a poet — she’s a force of nature on stage. With a magnetic presence and words that cut deep, her performances are immersive experiences where poetry, music, and activism intersect. Each show is a celebration of resistance, ancestry, and the power of language as a tool for transformation. At the invitation of MIMO, she makes her debut on Portuguese stages.
