Partnership between MIMO Festival and Jazz in Marciac – Brazil-France Season 2025
With a flourishing international career, Amaro Freitas has received widespread acclaim from major outlets such as The New York Times, DownBeat, The Guardian, and Libération. Following remarkable performances in Japan, the United States, and Europe, the pianist, composer, and arranger from Pernambuco has solidified his position as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz. At 32, he has already released the albums Sangue Negro (2016), Rasif (2018), Sankofa (2021), and most recently, Y'Y (2024). The latter — whose title means "water" or "river" in the Sateré-Mawé indigenous language — was born from a deep immersion in the Amazon. Inspired by his experience with the Sateré-Mawé community, the album reflects a spiritual and sensory connection with the rainforest, incorporating natural soundscapes and prepared piano techniques to evoke the richness and diversity of the Amazonian ecosystem. In addition to its strong symbolic and environmental themes, Y’Y features collaborations with acclaimed international musicians, including drummer Hamid Drake, saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, and harpist Brandee Younger — artists who further expand the project’s sonic range and global reach. For his concert at Jazz in Marciac, held in partnership with the MIMO Festival — where he was awarded the MIMO Instrumental Prize in 2016 — he will be joined by Sidiel Vieira (bass) and Rodrigo Digão Braz (drums). Together, they promise an immersive performance, blending Afro-Brazilian rhythms, improvisation, and deep musical spirituality.
