The duo previously known as “The Blind Couple from Mali”, outgrew the moniker through their innovative musical work, joining traditional African rhythms to blues, pop, and rock. Reaching such heights as being considered spokespersons for the history and culture of their people to the rest of the world, the duo formed by Amadou Bagayoko, a guitarist who used to perform beside Salif Keita in their group “Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako”, and Mariam Doumbia, singer and songwriter, they have broken through the world stage and spread African pop across the Western world, following in their quest to make people happy with their music.
After the hit that was their album “Dimanche à Bamako”, produced by Manu Chao in 2005, Amadou and Mariam continued to innovate and to bring new sounds to African melodies. With the release of their eighth international album, entitled “La Confusion” in 2017, Africa’s two most popular artists return with new songs, powerful lyrics and rhythms directly echoing their homeland, calling the public’s attention to what is happening in their country, both politically and culturally.
Mariam’s sweet voice, intertwined with Amadou’s blues guitar became the extremely charismatic duo’s calling card, and the depth of their partnership can be seen both on and off the stage. The pair met at Bamako’s Institute for Young Blind People, and with music as their main bond, they fell in love and decided to pursue a life, and a career together. With their musical prowess, they achieved three nominations to the “Victoires de la Musique” and one for “Grammy Award for Best World Music Album”. Having come to Brazil only a handful of times over the course of their career, they return in 2019 for exclusive performances at MIMO Festival.
