Noura Mint Seymali Mauritania

One of the bravest and most daring artists from Mauritania. She is a phenom of our time. Starting her career at 13 years old, she has developed her vocal technique and instrument-playing abilities by composing songs, and creating experimental melodies combining sounds from Sahara, Maghreb, and Western Africa, with contemporary influences.

Following a musical journey guided by Griot customs and keeping the commitment to preserving and passing her people’s traditions down, Noura has skillfully specialized in performing the unique sound of ardin: a 9-string instrument similar to a harp, and only played by women. In 2014, her debut album ‘Tzenni’ hit 1st in the ‘World Music Charts Europe’. In the following year, she was awarded ‘Best Female Artist from the North of Africa’ by the African Union. Also, in 2015, she became an internationally acclaimed artist, consequently, raising awareness on the importance of female participation in the music industry.

Her husband, Jeich Chighaly, joins her on stage by playing the electric guitar; Ousmane Touré plays the bass; and Matthew Tinari plays tambours. In her first visit to Brazil, Noura is performing at the 2019 MIMO Festival. In 2018, her concert at Amarante MIMO Festival was a big hit.
