She’s the one and only internationally acclaimed female professional fado guitar player. (T.N. fado is a traditional Portuguese music style. It also means fate, destiny.) Skillfully mastering the instrument, dazzlingly plucking the guitar, and playing melodies that intertwine traditional fado chords with classical music, jazz, and world music sounds. Her compositions and renditions are seasoned with her unique, delicate, feminine touch.
She started studying music as a child. At eight years old, she began taking classic guitar classes. At eighteen, she debuted in the Portuguese guitar scenario when she started going to the Lisbon ‘Clube do Fado’ (Fado Club) with Mário Pacheco and Fontes Rocha. Together with her journey in music, she has also earned a degree in Civil Engineering. However, she has quit the engineering career to focus on her love for music. In 2011, she recorded the album “Fados de Amor” (Love Fados). It is the first fado album ever recorded where a female artist plays the instrument and delivers renditions of the songs.
In 2014, she was awarded the “Prêmio Instrumentista” (Instrumentalist Award) by Fundação Amália Rodrigues. Two years later, she released her first solo album with her own compositions and tribute to her musical influences. After an unforgettable concert performed in the 2017 Amarante MIMO Festival, in Portugal, Marta Pereira da Costa came to Brazil to show that her talent changed Portuguese-guitar-playing into an extension of her Portuguese soul.
