Rafael Bqueer was born in Belém do Pará, Brazil. Holding a degree in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Pará, his artistic work is developed from multiple platforms, such as photography, video and performance. In his work, Bqueer investigates the impact of colonialism and globalization through icons of mass culture recontextualizing the social, racial and political complexities of Brazil. Combining actions with montages that cross his childhood memory, Bqueer’s work addresses the issue of racism, bringing his experiences with the parades of samba schools, drag art, and the mass culture of the peripheries aiming to question the Eurocentric symbols of power, as well as the absence of Afro-Brazilian and LGBTQIA+ narratives in artistic education and artistic institutions. He has participated in exhibitions such as the collective “Against, Again: Art Under Attack in Brazil”, at Anya & Andrew Shiva Gallery, in New York (2020), and the individual “UóHol” at the Rio Art Museum (2020), and was awarded the 7th Focus Art Rio Award (2019). He lives and works between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. His participation in the Forum of Ideas of MIMO Festival will have the theme “The existence of dissident bodies in the Amazon”. The LGBT, black, Afro-Indigenous experiences, and the struggle so that these visual and historical narratives can exist in the field of art and culture, not only in the Amazon region, but throughout Brazil, will be issues discussed in this expected meeting.
Telmo Fernandes holds a degree in Sociology, and a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences. PhD student in Psychology at the University of Porto. Specialist in themes as LGBTI+ youth and education.
