The main stage of MIMO Porto will be set on fire by the duo DuOud, formed by Jean-Pierre Smadja, born in Tunisia, and Algerian Mehdi Haddab, known for his work with the acclaimed French trio, Ekova, and more recently with Speed Caravan. DuOud means two oud – or lute – to play and dialogue. The North African duo mix their musical heritage with the most different contemporary styles, such as break beats, jazz grooves and metal guitar, which results in a highly contagious high combustion sound. Their debut album “Wild Serenade” won the New Talents award at the BBC Music Awards and resulted in a nearly three-year world tour. In 2006, they recorded “Sakat” in Yemen with Abdulatif Yagoub. In “Ping Kong”, DuOud flirted with futurism by surfing from kitsch to groove , and featured Cyril Atef and Vincent Segal from Bumcello and Malouma. At MIMO Porto, DuOud will showcase their recent experiences with new producers and the increasingly mixed sound, influenced and matured by international tours, ranging from Kenya to Burundi. From Ethiopia to Australia. From Mauritius to Thailand. And also to China. Briefly? Just give in to it.
