The Modernists were proponents of Portuguese art in the early decades of the 20th century. They seek to challenge ideas about beauty and its representation in paintings. They despise the teachings of fine arts schools, which in their opinion, undermine the freedom and creativity of each individual. They look for sources of inspiration outside museums, for example in African sculptures, pop art or Japanese prints that don’t use perspective to represent space. The Millennium Collection bcp includes the works of the great modernists, such as Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, Eduardo Viana, Almada Negreiros, Francis Smith and Jorge Barradas. These works will be in the center of the Exhibition presented in the Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Museum, interacting amongst themselves and proposing to visitors real contact with art-related issues – endless questions where answers are hypotheses to renew our view of the world.
