Asa was born as Bukola Elemide, but she chose the stage name Asa (pronounced Asha) due to her childhood, when she left home aimlessly. An old man from the neighborhood, aware of her wanderings, baptized her as Asa or “Hawk”, in the Yoruba language. The rhythmic French-Nigerian singer-songwriter flew away, and is now a superstar. She cultivated her musical roots and drew inspiration from Motown’s successes, and the political lyrics of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat. On a world tour of the album “V” (dedicated to the Nigerian Afrobeat, and featuring the rapper Wizkid, the duo The Cavemen and Ghanaian Amaarae), Asa will come to Portugal exclusively to present, on the main stage of MIMO Porto, her leafy tree of melodies that go by pop, soul, jazz and world music.
